For boats
Vaitahu is
the name of a bay, the valley and village in western Tahuata. It is the site of
most important village on that island.
Anchorage
The
anchorage is very scenic. The bay protect good from prevailing winds, and the
swell is unusual. But you have to be prepare for strong short gusts up to
30-40kn from the hills. In most cases the anchor keep good, but leaving boat
alone could be danger.
The bottom
is sand, anchor keep good. The depths in a bay are about 10-30 meters. There is a
room for about 10 yachts.
Dinghy
landing is easy in the small harbour on NE corner. There is a water on the
quay, but it is collected from the rain, not for drinking.

Fuel
difficult to find, ask locals or sail to Atuaona 10 Nm to NE.
Gas
only
Polynesian bottles available (not all the time). Better place to arrange a gas
is Atuona (10 NM to NE).
Groceries
there
is a one shop with limited products. Fresh baguette are available, but you
should make an order one day before..
WiFi
there
is a WiFi (available at anchorage), name ViniSPOT, but it’s not free and rather
quite slow. One hour cost about 4EUR, 20hrs – 40 EUR (payment via internet with
credit card). In 2016 the system worked wrong and with 1hr credit you can surf
all the time.
Cash
no
bank or ATM, bring a polynesian franks. Payment in US Dollars or Euro is
limited, as well using a credit cards.
Formalities
Vaitahu is
not port of entry. If you are come in to Polynesia you should visit first one
of three Gendarmerie areas in the Marquesas: Hiva Oa,
Ua Pou or Nuku Hiva.
For crews
No shower or WC.
If you arrive close to the July festivities the village practices dancing & drumming each evening.
There is no restaurant but local people may prepare a food especially for you. Ask them.
There is a small museum, open on request (free of charge). Catholic church is also worth to visit.
There is a dirty road links Vaitahu and Hapatoni – it’s takes about 3hrs (one way).
