For boats
Marina
Vaiare is the only one marina on Moorea
Island. Located in the
Vaiare bay where is busy ferry harbour connecting Moorea and Papeete.
Approach
Marina
Vaiare is only 12NM from Papeete.
There is a Vaiare pass, well marked by green/red buoys and leading light. When
you pass the buoys turn right to 282. Terminal and marine is lit, easy to
locate during the night.
Marina
There is a
marina with a slipway at Vaiare, but it is full of local boats. There is
usually no place for visiting boats, but you can try to do a reservation by
e-mail or phone. When we visited marina in October 2016 (out of season) there
were some places, and we moored there for one night.
Position of
the marina:
17 31.385 S
and 149 46.652W
When
approaching to the pontoons keep black/white vertical sticks on your starboard.
There is
three floating pontoons. Moor stern to a pier and tie a pick-up lines. They are
dirty with sharp shells, so use a gloves.
Electricity
(230V, 16A) and water on the pontoons, both included in the price.
This marina
is probably best / most safe place to leave the boat for cyclone season on Society Islands.
There is a
guy living in the house close to the pontoons. He can be helpful, speaks
English so ask him anything.
Marina office is located on ferry docks, other
side of the bay. It is 20 minutes walk distance. Go there ASAP to do
formalities and payment.
Anchorage
You can
drop the anchor at
17 31.890S
and 149 46.182W (20m, sand with some coral heads)
This is
well protected spot for all directions of wind, no swell, but 1NM from the
marina. You can also land by dinghy on the beach.
Formalities
Moorea is
not port of entry, do it in Papeete.
Bank / Cash
There is a
Socredo Bank close to the ferry terminal with ATM.
For crews
There is WC
and Shower in the marina. There is no WiFi.
Vaiare is
the ‘town’ where the Papeete
ferries dock are located. There is no much to see. Big Champion market (100m
left from the marina), some other small groceries, rent a car office (near the ferries).
That’s all on the land. Maybe it’s a good spot to start car journey around the
island.
We checked
some places for snorkeling (outside the bay, north and south on inner reef) but
there is no many fishes, we were disappointment.
A Champion market
is well stocked with reasonable prices.
