For boats
Naonao
island is the most south point of Raiatea, and it is also very beauty place,
worth to visit and to snorkel around.
The island
is privet, do not go ashore without a permission.
There is 3
possibilities of mooring / anchoring:
1. Pick up the mooring buoy (the
only one) at position:
16 54.924
and 151 25.726
Be care if
NE-N-NW wind is blowing. The mooring is long and you will be pushed close to
the shallow water and corals. But with E-SE-S-SW-W wind (more common) it is
very safe mooring buoy.
2. Anchor in front of the island,
at position:
16 54.884
and 151 25.640W
This spot
is safe only with E-SE-S-SW-W wind (prevailing winds)
3. It is possible to anchor for
the day over the top the barrier reef just west of the western tip of the
motu. Sand grounds are between 2 to 3 meters. Cross the
sand shoal, taking care of the coral heads on your right, anchor just in
front of the beach at position
16 55.153
and 151 25.895W
If you want
to stay here for the night, you should put another anchor. If the wind is too
strong, do not leave the yacht unattended at this anchorage.
For crews
Good
snorkeling and swimming may be found off the south-western end of the island.
There is a small beach on the island itself. Motu Nao Nao is privately owned,
so please ask for authorization for going ashore. Beware of the reef off
western point of the motu.
