For boats
Usually
this is a first stop for boats coming from Raiatea.
Just after the corner of P.te Toamaro begins Baie Apu. There are more than 10
mooring buoy near the position:
16 40.892S
and 151 29.116W
Some
mooring buoy belong to a local restaurant, some to pearl farm etc., any way
pick up one of them, there are free (in my opinion, but I can be wrong).
This place
is well protected from prevailing winds (NE-E-SE), but open for S winds, when
staying there could be uncomfortable but still safe.
Dinghy
landing
There are 3
small wooden wharfs around, best one is a short one in front of a restaurant at
position:
16 40.882S
and 151 29.013W
You can tie
your dinghy there.
We stayed 4
nights on the mooring ball. The yacht club is closed, but there are still
moorings
associated with it, yellow ones. Not sure of the maintenance schedule for
them. You
can't land at the yacht club dock, tabu sign, and the American caretaker says
they closed
the yacht club to do some improvements but have no plan.
For crews
There are
few places to visit around:
A Pearl
Farm you will find near the main road (turn right when leave the wharf). If you
visit before noon on Monday - Friday you can see them harvest the pearls from
the oysters. Of course, they would like you to buy something, but not
necessary. The products are high quality but expensive. Anyway it’s a nice
place worth to visit.
The
restaurant front of mooring buoys offer a night dinner with the buffet and
sometimes a life dance performance. But you have to make a reservation few
hours before. The cost is about 6000-7000 XPF, depends how many persons. During
the day they offer many non alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.
There is
also a small boutique / souvenir shop (green small house) with some souvenirs,
ice creams and soft drinks.
